School of Foreign Languages Celebrates Asian Cultures

 

 
Department of Asian Languages of the School of Foreign Languages at the University of Jordan (UJ) on Thursday, March 27th, held a cultural festivity to celebrate the cultures, languages, and traditions of Asia.
 
Held under the theme "The Crossroads of Jordanian and Asian Cultures", the event aimed at expanding the students' knowledge about the different countries of Asia.
 
The festivity saw the attendance of diplomats and cultural  attachés, academics, students, and visitors from outside the university.
 
In his welcome address, UJ Vice President Prof. Ahmad Majdoubeh explained that UJ is keen to organize various kinds of cultural activities as it can promote cultural openness, tolerance and the exchange of ideas and knowledge among the university students.
 
The event included a variety of activities and folkloric performances reflecting the cultural heritage of the peoples of Turkey, Russia, Korea, China, Japan and Indonesia.
 
The students also recited Mahmoud Darwish's most famous poem "To My Mother" in all the Asian languages taught at UJ.
 
In addition, performances of Korean Taekwondo, Chinese Kungfu, and a re-enactment of a Turkish wedding ceremony were also presented.
 
The Department of Asian Languages offers four separate B.A programs, namely the Korean-English, Chinese-English Program, Russian-English and Turkish-English joint programs.
 
In addition, the Department offers academic instruction in Japanese, Urdu and Hebrew; some of those are expected to be upgraded to full B.A program status in the future.
