This month, we proudly feature Professor Omar Htamala, an esteemed alumnus whose bond with the University of Jordan has shaped the course of his life.
"My connection to the University of Jordan spans decades," Htamala says. "My father was a professor here for nearly 40 years, so during my childhood, I frequently visited the campus, playing in its courtyards and forming strong, lasting relationships." His early immersion didn't stop there. "I was also inspired by its faculties as a student at the university's school, graduating with its first cohort alongside many of my classmates." This early exposure naturally led him to UJ for higher education. "Later, I joined the Faculty of Engineering, where I studied mechanical engineering. This became the foundation for my academic journey in my master's and doctoral studies."
Reflecting on his undergraduate years, Htamala describes the five-year bachelor's program in engineering as "a remarkable experience. The coursework was complex and advanced, allowing me to acquire sufficient competence and a solid foundation to pursue further studies. This experience equipped me with the confidence to face future challenges successfully."
The relations he formed at UJ were just as significant. "I spent wonderful days at the university, filled with beautiful memories," he recalls. "My university classmates were the same friends I had as a child in school, and we proudly became part of the university as alumni. Even after graduation, I continued to visit the university to meet my professors and revisit the faculty where I studied."
When asked about his most memorable university moments, Htamala emphasizes the vibrant social environment. "The social life at the university was excellent. In addition to the lectures and the knowledge we gained, I experienced a wonderful social environment with my fellow students from various faculties. I learned a lot from them, as we used to study together, even with students from different fields such as medicine." He elaborates on its importance: "Social life is crucial in shaping one's personality, as it provides you with skills that help you succeed in the future."
He adds: "Success is not only based on academic achievement but also on how you think, interact with society, think outside the box, and embraces others' ideas. These qualities are cultivated during the early years of undergraduate studies, contributing to a person's academic and social development."
Htamala offers a powerful message to current UJ students: "There are no limits to human ambition; you can achieve any goal you set for yourself. There are no boundaries if your goal is clear, you remain persistent, and you dedicate your effort and skills toward it. You will certainly achieve what you aspire to."
And what's his secret to success? "Self-confidence, perseverance, and never giving up," he stresses. "If you have a specific goal you want to achieve, stay persistent and work on it with diligence and precision. You will undoubtedly reach it."
Htamala has observed significant growth since his student days. "The University has evolved significantly. New buildings and diverse disciplines have been introduced, reflecting the development of fields and specializations required in the job market, such as information technology and artificial intelligence. The university has kept pace with these advancements by establishing new faculties and academic programs to benefit students."
His final message emphasizes his deep affection for UJ: "The memories of the university are unforgettable. Every year when I visit Jordan, I love visiting the university to reminisce about my time there and revisit the library and lecture halls where I used to attend classes."
