The University of Jordan (UJ) has been leading in a number of
implemented externally funded capacity building projects in the field of higher
education in Jordan since 2015.
UJ has won funding for 29 EU capacity building projects under the
Erasmus + program (2015-2020), in addition to obtaining funding for 3 projects
within Horizon 2020 EU program, one project within UCPM, and four within the FP7
program, performing as a leading partner in 6 of them and a strategic partner
in the 31 others.
Moreover, UJ is the only university that has obtained funding for a
project dubbed EU-Middle east Network in Action (EUMENIA), as well as obtaining
funding since 2018 for several projects from the DAAD, NUFFIC, Share-net, US
Embassy, and the British council.
According to the International Affairs Unit, UJ is at the top of
Jordan's HE institutions in a number of partners, reaching 262 partners in
projects associated with higher education institutions from all around the
world.
The abovementioned projects fall within several areas including
Water resources management and climate change, artificial intelligence,
conflict resolution, integration of students with disabilities, health,
renewable energy, traditional crafts, arts therapy, technology and software
engineering, hybrid electric vehicles, food safety, educational sciences, and
others.
Currently, 11 EU capacity building projects under the Erasmus +
program are still being implemented, of which are: HEALING, ECO-CAR, eMWRE, and DECAIR projects.
The HEALING project's main objective is to develop and design a
professional diploma program in Art Therapy at the School of Art and Design,
starting from the 2021-2022 academic year.
The one-year multidisciplinary diploma program, which is the first
of its kind in the region, will enable staff from a variety of professional
backgrounds to include arts as part of their therapeutic work. Arts therapy
includes music therapy, drama therapy, and visual arts therapy, such as
painting, sculpture and ceramic molding.
The program has been developed by the collective efforts of the
arts and design, medicine and rehabilitation sciences schools, in cooperation
with the EU's Erasmus+ programme to include this program within the academic
programs at UJ's School of Art and Design.
Several meetings and ToT workshops were organized within the
project, whether at the University or at other partner universities in Jordan
(Al-Hashimiya, Irbid Al-Ahlia, Al-Israa, Science and Technology), with the
participation of project team members.
The duration of the study in this program, which has been approved
by UJ's Board of Trustees, is one year (2 semesters), during which the
students will obtain a professional diploma in art therapy, so that students of
the program who specialize in medicine and rehabilitation sciences can directly
practice art therapy in clinics.
Another significant project that has been executed currently is the
eMWRE Erasmus+ Project. The project's main outcome is the establishment of an
innovative eMaster in Water Resources Engineering to modernize the education
using innovative technology and advanced tools to provide more sustainable
solutions to the water scarcity problems in the MENA region.
The 3-year project also aims to strengthen existing relevant
curricula and establish new academic and research networks in water resources
in partner countries, and stimulate cooperation between academia and local
governments.
The project's partners are the University of Jordan, Mutah
University, and from Palestine Al-Quds University and Islamic University in
Gaza, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in Netherlands, Vrije
Universiteit Brussel and "Eummena".
DeCAIR is also another Erasmus+ project implemented presently under
the leadership of UJ. It aims to develop a new master’s program in Artificial
Intelligence and Robotics (AIR) at UJ, a new bachelor’s program in intelligent
systems engineering at the Tafila Technical University, and an AIR curricula
for current bachelors and master’s degrees at partnering Jordanian and Lebanese
universities.
Other project goals are to improve the teaching capacity at
universities of the Partner Countries, build a network of highly qualified
professionals in these areas among partner universities, and improve
collaboration with local and regional industries and community for applying AIR
technologies in solving industry and community problems.
The project is based on building AIR capacities by transferring
European expertise, academia and industrial networks, developing new AIR
laboratories, and enhancing cooperation with local, regional and European
companies.
The other project's partners are the Jordan University of Science
and Technology (JUST), Tafila Technical University (TTU) from Jordan, Lebanese
University (LU), Beirut Arab University (BAU) from lebanon, and Università di
Pisa (UNIPI), Universita’ degli Studi di Genova – UNIGE, Universidad de Granada
(UGR), University of Stuttgart (UST) and Creative Thinking Development –
CRETHIDEV from the EU.
It should be emphasized that developing effective national,
regional, and international strategic partnerships is one of UJ's strategic
objectives, including partnerships that support scientific research and
capacity building, establishing of joint graduate programs, and exchange
experiences and knowledge.
