UJ Architecture Students Earn "Honorable Mention" in Tamayouz Excellence Award

Three talented Architecture students from the University of Jordan (UJ), Ahmad Khaled Makawi, Yamen Talal Alhattab, and Mohammad Omar Alqaissiah, have received an "Honorable Mention" in the prestigious Tamayouz Excellence Award 2024 – Diwan Award for Architecture.

Their award-winning project, titled "Siraj," was developed under the supervision of Dr. Deyala Al-Tarawneh and was inspired by the historic "House of Wisdom," the renowned scientific institution of the Islamic Golden Age. Their design for the Iraq Pavilion at the Baghdad International Fairgrounds stood out among 188 submissions from architectural firms and students across 34 countries worldwide.

The judging panel praised the project for its innovative spatial arrangements, seamless navigation, and mature design approach. In their comments, the jury noted:

“This project showcases an intriguing approach to massing and the thoughtful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Inspired by the House of Wisdom, the narrative is compelling and contributes a strong conceptual foundation. The design process is clear, with rationally distributed functions and a well-balanced interplay between enclosed and open areas. The project's circulation and environmental control strategies are commendable, reflecting a sophisticated understanding of spatial organization."

The students were honored during a special ceremony held on campus, which also featured the signing of a cooperation agreement between UJ and the Tamayouz Excellence Award. The agreement aims to foster collaboration, exchange expertise, and encourage further student participation in global initiatives. It was signed by UJ President Prof. Nathir Obeidat and Tamayouz Middle East and North Africa Coordinator, Engineer Osaid Al-Eitan.

Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Menwer Attarakih, congratulated the students on their achievement, emphasizing the School's commitment to providing high-quality education and forging international partnerships that empower students to compete and excel on the world stage.

The ceremony was attended by vice deans, assistants, and the Chairman of the Department of Architecture
