UJ Sees Several Honors and Triumphs

The University of Jordan (UJ) continues to achieve notable milestones across academic, research, professional, and international platforms. These honors and achievements reflect the university’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and global engagement, and highlight the outstanding contributions of its faculty, researchers, students, alumni, and administrative units at the national, regional, and international levels.

Best Institutional Communication for Universities at ICON Summit 2025

The Media, Public Relations, and Radio Unit received the “Best Institutional Communication for Universities” Award at the ICON Summit 2025, held in November 26th, in Amman under the patronage of HRH Prince Ali bin Al Hussein.

The recognition highlights the Unit’s effective communication model, strong community engagement, and leadership in producing credible, innovative media content. UJ President Prof. Nathir Obeidat praised the achievement as the University’s first of its kind in the field, noting that it reflects coordinated efforts and high professional standards.

Unit Director Dr. Rakan Abu Orabi emphasized that the award represents the entire University community and affirmed the Unit’s commitment to building on this success through creative and impactful media initiatives.

President of IAESTE International for 2026

Dr. Osaid Jawdat Matar, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was elected President of the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE), becoming the first Jordanian academic to hold this position since the organization’s founding in 1948. The election took place during IAESTE’s 81st General Conference, held from 14–19 November 2025 in Charlottetown, Canada.

Matar, who previously served as National Secretary of IAESTE Jordan, expanded Jordan’s participation in international programs and strengthened institutional partnerships, earning broad support from member states. During the conference, he received a Certificate of Appreciation and the IAESTE pin in recognition of his outstanding contributions.

As President-elect for 2026, Matar will help shape IAESTE’s strategic direction and represent the association in global forums, promoting paid technical training opportunities and international cultural exchange for students across more than eighty member countries.

2025 L’Oréal UNESCO for Women in Science Award

Dr. Mayis Al Dughmi, Associate Professor of Physiotherapy, won the 2025 L’Oréal UNESCO for Women in Science Levant Young Talents Award, becoming the only Jordanian researcher honored across the Levant this year.

She received the award for her study, “Promoting Sleep Health in Parkinson’s Disease through Telerehabilitation,” which offers a remote, exercise-based intervention aimed at improving sleep quality and daily well-being for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The project reflects global trends in digital health and accessible physiotherapy services.

The L’Oréal UNESCO program recognizes outstanding women researchers in the region, and UJ expressed pride in Al Dughmi’s achievement, noting that it reinforces the university’s growing presence in regional and international research excellence.

King Hussein Cancer Research Awards 2025

Another significant recognition came through the King Hussein Cancer Research Awards 2025, where two UJ researchers were honored, reflecting the university’s ongoing contributions to cancer research in the region.

Prof. Mohammad Abu Hilal, Professor of Surgical Oncology, received the Lifetime Achievement Award (regional track), while Dr. Walhan Alshaer, Associate Professor at UJ’s Cell Therapy Center, received the Young Investigator Award. The ceremony, held in Amman, on November 15, 2025, was presented by HRH Prince Talal bin Muhammad and attended by HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center.

The awards celebrate outstanding scientific progress in cancer research and position UJ among leading institutions in the field.

Distinguished Researcher Award at Sustainable Tourism and Heritage Conference

Professors Ibrahim Al-Kurdi and Maysoon Al-Nahar from the School of Tourism and Hospitality were also honored with the Distinguished Researcher Award during the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Heritage, hosted by the University of Ha’il, Saudi Arabia.

The award was presented by HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Saad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of the Ha’il Region, in recognition of the scholars’ outstanding research contributions to sustainable tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The two professors expressed their appreciation, emphasizing that the honor reflects not only personal achievement but also the University of Jordan’s growing global reputation for academic excellence and impactful research.

2025 Economic Research Award

UJ secured first place in the inaugural Amman Chamber of Commerce Award for Economic Research 2025 through a study led by Dr. Adham Alsharkawi, titled “Strategies for Enhancing Urban Food Security Using Deep Reinforcement Learning.”

The award was announced during a ceremony held under the patronage of the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Eng. Yarub Qudah, in the presence of the President of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, Senator Khalil Al-Haj Tawfiq.

Alsharkawi’s study introduces an advanced simulation model powered by deep reinforcement learning to strengthen data-driven policymaking on urban food security, offering insights that help decision-makers balance long-term planning with rapid emergency response. He noted that the study provides practical tools for addressing emerging food security challenges.

First Place in Arab Board Examination in Cardiovascular Diseases

UJ alumni also shared in these successes, as Dr. Osama Nwiran, a distinguished graduate of the School of Medicine, secured first place in the Arab Board of Health Specializations (ABHS) examination in Cardiovascular Diseases.

This accomplishment reaffirms the high professional standards and excellence of UJ alumni. The Arab Board plays a pivotal role in advancing medical practice across the Arab world by setting unified scientific and clinical standards in line with international best practices.
