UJ Explores Research Collaboration with MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

On November 17, 2025, the University of Jordan (UJ) hosted Director of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge, Prof. Jan Löwe. UJ President Prof. Nathir Obeidat met with Löwe to explore new avenues for research collaboration and strengthen ties between the two leading institutions.

The meeting took place in presence of Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) President, Prof. Khaled El-Salem, along with senior officials from UJ.

During the meeting, Obeidat highlighted the university’s keenness to expand research collaborations, emphasizing the importance of research that supports the national economy and link to industry. He noted that while the university has strong expertise, enhancing research infrastructure remains a key challenge, and partnerships with the industrial sector are essential for impactful outcomes.

Löwe provided an overview of LMB, an independent research institution focused on understanding molecular-level biological processes, stressing the value of investing in independent research and integrating institutional support, international researchers, and industry partnerships to translate discoveries into practical applications.

Löwe also visited the Cell Therapy Center, reviewed ongoing research and treatment programs, expressing admiration for the work and the importance of supporting basic sciences.

LMB is recognized globally for pioneering work in protein structure analysis, DNA sequencing, and monoclonal antibody development, with its scientists awarded twelve Nobel Prizes. The laboratory fosters an international research environment and collaborates closely with industry to transform scientific knowledge into innovations.

The visit, organized by UJ’s International Affairs Unit in cooperation with the British embassy, is part of a UK initiative to explore support for education and research in Jordan through partnerships with leading UK research institutions.
