UJ Explores Expanding Academic and Cultural Cooperation with Chinese Counterparts

Academic and cultural cooperation between the University of Jordan (UJ) and Chinese higher education institutions continued to expand throughout 2025, reflecting a shared commitment to innovation, academic exchange, and long-term partnership. UJ has several cooperation and student-exchange agreements with leading Chinese universities, including Shanghai International Studies University, Peking University, and Dalian University of Technology. These partnerships cover Arabic-language instruction for Chinese students, faculty and researcher exchanges, and joint projects in innovation and technology.

Chinese Academic Delegations from Leading Universities

On 20 October 2025, the University of Jordan welcomed an academic delegation representing several leading Chinese universities to explore opportunities for academic and research cooperation, innovation, and exchange. The visit built on earlier discussions with the China Association of Higher Education (CAHE) and aligned with the China–Arab Universities “10+10” Cooperation Plan, one of the key initiatives under China–Arab practical cooperation.

The delegation was received by Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Financial Affairs and Digital Transformation Prof. Ziad Hawamdeh, who emphasized that the visit reflects the growing depth of academic ties between UJ and Chinese universities and a shared vision for sustainable, long-term cooperation in higher education and research. Members of the delegation praised UJ’s research environment and expressed interest in expanding collaboration in engineering, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and applied sciences, underscoring UJ’s role as a regional hub for academic and cultural exchange between Jordan and China.

The visit concluded with an exchange of commemorative shields and a tour of key university facilities, including the National Heritage (Archaeology) Museum.

UJ also received another academic delegation on 19 October 2025, representing several leading Chinese universities in coordination with the China Association of Higher Education (CAHE). The visit further reflected the momentum of UJ–China academic engagement and reinforced cooperation under the China–Arab Universities “10+10” Cooperation Plan.

During the meeting, UJ officials highlighted growing network of partnerships with Chinese universities and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to expanding cooperation in Arabic-language instruction, faculty and researcher exchanges, and joint innovation projects. The delegation commended UJ’s advanced research environment and expressed strong interest in deepening collaboration in engineering, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and applied sciences.

The University explored prospects for joint academic and research cooperation with Southern Medical University (SMU) of China during a visit by an academic delegation on 18 December 2025, with a particular focus on medical and health sciences.

UJ President Prof. Nadtir Obeidat met with the delegation and emphasized the university’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships in medical education, joint research, and knowledge exchange, including cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine. Discussions addressed joint supervision of graduate students, scholarships, student exchange and medical training programs, as well as collaboration through research groups and co-funded projects.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at formalizing academic and research cooperation between the two institutions.

Shandong Province Delegation

On 15 December 2025, UJ explored prospects for strengthening academic, scientific, and cultural cooperation during a meeting with a Chinese delegation headed by Li Hong, Deputy Director General of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Shandong Province.

The meeting was chaired by Vice President for Scientific Schools, Prof. Ashraf Abu Karaky, and attended by senior university officials and deans. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation with educational and training institutions in Shandong Province, particularly in priority fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and Chinese language teaching.

Abu Karaky emphasized UJ’s strategic vision as a comprehensive institution committed to enhancing student and faculty exchange, developing specialized training programs, and expanding academic collaboration. Li Hong highlighted Shandong Province’s rich academic and cultural heritage and provided an overview of its 68 accredited universities, including Shandong University, noting its strengths in mathematics, chemistry, medicine, and Arabic language programs.

Both sides underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in academic training, joint research, medical education, global rankings, sustainability initiatives, and cultural exchange through student activities and faculty participation in international conferences.
