Sunday, September 2nd marked the 57th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Jordan (UJ), which is considered to be the first provider of university education in Jordan.
Jordanians remember with pride and honor when His Majesty, the late King Hussein Bin Talal, on September 2nd, 1962, issued a decree to establish the University of Jordan to be one of the main engines in ensuring a promising future for Jordanians and higher education in the country.
The University’s records reveal that the University embarked firstly as a campus consisting of two small buildings, eight faculty members, and it welcomed the first class of students numbering 167 students, 18 of which were female students only in one school: the School of Arts. The school's first graduating class, the Class of 1966, had only 60 students.
Currently, the University has a wide range of educational programs that cater to the needs of both the Jordanian and Arab markets. Students can choose from more than 250 academic programs offered by 24 faculties in various human and applied scientific, medical and health disciplines.
Moreover, the University has achieved advanced positions in various international rankings. UJ is one of the best 650 Universities worldwide, one of the best 10 Arab universities, and it has recently achieved 5 stars according to QS Stars and among the top 500 universities worldwide in the 2020 QS Graduate Employability Rankings. In addition, it has been ranked among the world's top 151-200 universities by the Times Higher Education (THE) Golden Age University Rankings 2019.
UJ has obtained international accreditation for many of its programs, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, rehabilitation, nursing, information technology and other disciplines.
The University has also launched a solar power project that will save around JD8 million for both UJ and its hospital. It is also focusing all its efforts to become a smart university by computerizing its systems and education, noting that currently, 12 per cent of subjects taught at the University are online.
The University of Jordan will continue in its endeavor to become global, smart, productive, progressive, financially stable center of higher education as well as a catalyst for cultural enlightenment.
